“J”, a retired police officer living near Riverview Park, had a really tough situation:
“A whole family of raccoons was living between the ceiling and roof of my ranch-style home. I called Animal Control and they offered a trap. I’m elderly and have problems getting around, I didn’t even know where the raccoons were getting in. I couldn’t see how a trap would help. I called a pest control company which would have charged me over $1000 and planned to trap and make holes in the ceiling to get all the raccoons out. I called XX through a friend, and they first located the area the raccoons were getting in under a gable. XX used lights shining outside the entrance hole, loud music from inside the house and ammonia rags around the entrance and within a couple days the mother raccoon removed her babies. The hole was stuffed with newspaper to make sure the raccoons didn’t return while waiting to get the hole fixed the next day and that repair was my only expense. The raccoons never bothered me again after they left.”

This is the situation another city resident faced:
“A raccoon family was in the tree right in front of the porch. I was offered a trap when I called Animal Control, I didn’t even want to touch the trap, I was really scared. XX hung a bright lamp in the tree near the hole where the raccoon was. They hung a transistor radio from the tree and spread rags soaked in ammonia at the bottom of the tree. The next day my daughter came home from school and saw the mother raccoon carrying her babies one by one across the road to the woods. Then the hole in the tree was covered up.”

A groundhog problem in Manchester:
“We planted tomato plants in our back yard and a groundhog kept eating the tomatoes which was really annoying one of the people in our house. Another Manchester resident told us how to make a wobbly fence to keep the groundhog out. I didn’t think it would work but it did. We got our tomatoes and the groundhog got to live.”

Raccoons in the fireplace. Brookline.
“A raccoon family was living in the chimney leading to the boarded up fireplace in our spare room. I didn’t mind but my girlfriend was afraid it would burst in. We didn’t want the raccoons killed and neither did the landlord so we didn’t want to call Animal Control. My landlord looked for advice on how to deal with this. We waited until we saw the mother raccoon leave out of the chimney at night then opened the top corner of the boarded fireplace slightly and threw tennis balls sprayed with ammonia into the fireplace then placed a loud radio right behind the boards in the room. That raccoon family was out of there in a day. We got the chimney capped after that.”
NB: We do not recommend risking direct contact with raccoons or any other wildlife, under any circumstances. All the above measures were taken without risking direct contact with wildlife.
